Coming up with a unique business name is no easy feat. After torturing myself and others with endless conversations, I landed on Piper's Lane. Piper is our dog. He really is my number one gardening buddy. I am never outside alone, as Piper keeps the coast clear of any squirrels, chases flying bugs and runs energetically back and forth along our back fence whenever cars, people or (gasp!) other dogs dare to walk down the alley. Really, it is big of him to let me garden in his space!
What's a gal to do if she wants to grow gazillions of flowers, but lives smack in the middle of Denver? Get creative with using all of her space. One example: I cleared the slope of weeds behind my fence in the alley and built a 25' x 3' raised bed. Voila...room for more flowers! I also plant in every inch of space in my yard as well as neighbor's yards! I have some wonderful people in my neighborhood who let me plant and cut in their gardens. Lucky me.
Our garage, untouched since 1926, is the hub of my summer growing and flower arranging activities. I've got my compost tea brewer percolating natural fertilizer to sprinkle on the plants, vases, soil amendments and all of my tools. This little enamel table is where I arrange all of the flowers for the CSA. I bought this 1960s turquoise fridge to serve as a cooler for arrangements. Worked great for the first year, but we are in the process of building a walk-in cooler (to be housed in the garage of course) to have more room for more flowers in 2021!
I just finished planting SO MANY bulbs for next Spring. I am a little embarrassed to admit that throughout the dog days of summer, I would escape down to the cool basement (where I set up my little office) and order bulbs. (You really do have to order early to get the good stuff). However, I would forget that I had ordered a batch of bulbs and do it again (a few times!) Needless to say, we will have a bountiful Spring to look forward to!
